CoC Essen and Ruhr region

In November 2006, the European Council awarded the title to the city of Essen, representing the entire Ruhr region.

For the first time, the Ruhr region, a metropolitan region with 5.3 million inhabitants and 53 cities inhabited by 120 nationalities, will bear the title of European Capital of Culture (CoC).

Around 2,000 project proposals from artists, initiatives, institutions and RUHR.2010 enthusiasts have been evaluated.

The projects are assigned to the four fields of action “City of Opportunities”, “City of Arts”, “City of Cultures” and “City of Creativity”, which are intended to open up the entire Ruhr area as a playing field for the program.
The reception point for visitors will be the Zollverein World Heritage Site in Essen.

In addition, there will be four additional visitor centers in Oberhausen (Platz der Guten Hoffnung/ CentrO), Bochum (ViktoriaQuartierBochum), Dortmund (Dortmunder U) und Duisburg (City Palais).
